2014 Mountain Justice Spring Break

March 9-16, 2014
Hello friends of justice,
Here we are again at the outset of the grand adventure known as Mountain Justice Spring Break in West Virginia, where issues of extreme energy extraction and their solutions collide! The planning collective is putting together a sure to be memorable agenda filled with lively live music and dancing, delicious fare, captivating speakers, cutting-edge workshops, opportunities to see climate destruction with your own eyes at sites where mountaintop removal coal mining and hydraulic fracturing for natural gas occur, and surely some hands-on community service; plus an exciting action that will be remembered through the ages. The week will be full of chances to meet and talk with community members from West Virginia and elsewhere whose lives have been directly impacted by MTR and fracking.
How can you miss this?!
This year, camp will again be hosted on 57 lovely acres in a rural part of northern West Virginia at the Doddridge County Park surrounded by wooded hills and a winding mountain creek. Nearby, this beautiful scenery and the people who inhabit it are under siege by fracking operations. Not too far away, mountains are still being obliterated for dirty, dangerous coal. The heavy costs of human health and runaway climate change, among other things, link these communities and issues together.
At MJSB, we will explore the relationship between MTR and fracking, while also having some time to bring in the dangers of nukes, tar sands, and the like. We will also be learning a variety of ways in which impacted community members and activists are coming together to stave off the onslaught of climate destruction. We will talk about everything from the science of ultrafine particles to consent and respect. From anti-oppression to direct action to regulatory approaches to solidarity, sustainability, and community resiliency. We will reconnect with old friends and make new ones for life.
